In October of 2021, Amy was undergoing evaluation for a kidney transplant. Her transplant team gave her information about the Transplant Mentors program, and reached out to Gift of Life. She was “eager to get matched with someone who had walked a similar path, preferably someone close to my age.” We matched Amy with Amber Pettis, a kidney transplant recipient and trained Transplant Mentor.

Looking back on the experience of connecting with Amber she explained, “I remember the excitement around sharing our unique stories. We talked about dialysis, and she told me all about her kidney transplant. I loved hearing about her current life. She is so active and full of energy. Amber filled me with so much hope about what was to come. Every time we talk, I walk away knowing more and feeling inspired. She is such a gift to me.”

Here’s more of what Amy had to say about the value of her mentor connection and its impact on her transplant experience:

What would you like others to know about the Mentor experience?
You should definitely take advantage of the Transplant Mentor program. Having a friend to support you in this journey is critical, especially when it’s someone who can speak from recent experience. They can answer questions and soothe any anxieties surrounding the surgery, recovery, and post-op life.

How did having a Transplant Mentor help you on your journey?
Amber offered a different type of support than my family and friends. None of them have had an organ transplant. While they can offer hugs, quality time, and words of affirmation, Amber could speak directly from experience. She knew the frustrations of a high phosphorus level and what it was like to be on dialysis. She could tell me how exhilarating it was to get the call about her soon-to-be kidney. Everything she shared was valuable information.

What would you say to someone considering reaching out for a mentor?
Do it! Reaching out to a mentor is a smart decision. Going through a transplant is a major life-changer. You’ll feel more confident when you have someone to walk you through it, from start to finish.

What else would you like people to know?
Amber was not only my Transplant Mentor, but she’s also become a friend. Heck, our mothers even chatted on the phone! It was Amber’s idea. They swapped stories and even prayed together. We have plans to meet in person the next time Amber (and hopefully her mom) come to KU for a check-up.

Hopefully, by the time we meet, we can all toast my new kidney!
